Proof of ‘Embedded depth’ of timber utility poles a WORLD FIRST

Our NDT has transformed how networks around the world gather and use pole condition data, and how timber pole assets are managed.

We are pleased to now bring to market our very latest data offering for managing asset serviceability and risk across aging timber pole populations.

‘PolePosition™ PLUS’ goes further than GIS positioning and the indexing of ground compaction as featured in PolePosition™. It provides asset owners with the depth that each pole is embedded in the ground without any additional testing process required.

Leveraging 14 years of data and introducing ML and AI, the NDT automation feature was collaboratively developed as part of a two-year innovation project with the UK’s ‘Energy Innovation Council’ (EIC).  It is a world-first achievement for our New Zealand based data and technology business and addresses what has to date been a serviceability ‘blind-spot’ for asset owners managing ageing timber pole networks.

For modern timber pole populations correct installation of poles is easier to determine but for older poles that may otherwise be assessed as strong and serviceable, poor previous installation practices and shallow embedment relative to a pole’s loading introduces significant unseen risk of failure.

As part and parcel of the ongoing digital transformation of asset management across utilities networks, only ‘PolePosition™ PLUS’ delivers this valuable and objective data.
